Amid the Coronavirus pandemic and general dreariness, Sam Fender is back to brighten your spirits with his cover of Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black. It was originally recorded earlier this year live on Radio 1 as part of their ‘Live Lounge’ series.
However, fans of Sam Fender are a persistent bunch. They quickly made it known on social media that they wished for it to be officially released for streaming. Due to these requests, Fender has now officially released it on all major streaming services for your listening pleasure.
Fender stated:
Back To Black is such a long-standing favourite of mine, and Amy remains a national treasure. I love that album too, I hopefully did the track some justice. You’ll all be the judge of that…
Fender’s ‘Live Lounge’ Youtube video has already amassed over 500,000 views after being up for just over a month. It has clearly been judged well by fans of Fender and Winehouse alike. The cover features Fender’s spin on the melodramatic number. His vocals are kept central throughout, with a few modern updates. The introduction of a few taps of the drums and captivating use of a saxophone- courtesy of Johnny ‘Bluehat’ Davis’, retains the true power of the original while having Fender’s emotional stamp on it.
This year has already been a significant addition to Fender’s impressive resume. He’s played at Elton John’s Oscars event to a star-studded audience and released his new single Hold Out. In addition to releasing a cover, Fender has also announced a series of rescheduled tour dates for the shows which were affected by the current coronavirus epidemic.
The North-Shields native was supposed to play a list of dates in the U.K. in March, including two nights at London’s affectionately named ‘Ally Pally’ a.k.a Alexandra Palace. His tour also included a massive show at Newcastle Arena, however, they all had to be cancelled. Fender is never one to disappoint and his tour will now take place in August and September, with all original tickets remaining valid for the new dates.
The BRITs Critics’ Choice award-winner has performed on both The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Furthermore, he has sold-out shows in both NYC and LA. If that wasn’t enough he has also played at 2019’s Lollapalooza in Chicago and London’s Hyde Park with legends Bob Dylan and Neil Young. These UK dates are also set to quickly sell out and be just as unmissable.
The 25-Year-Old artist is known for playing every gig as though it is his last. Innately observational and never one to shy away from current social issues, Fender’s music speaks for itself- armed with impressive vocals, naturally a Fender guitar and a belief that music does have the power to change the world. Be sure to listen to his cover of Back To Black and grab a ticket for his rescheduled tour if you haven’t already.
