Indie rock stalwarts Death Cab for Cutie have officially announced their 11th studio album, I Built You A Tower, arriving June 5th. The release marks a significant milestone for the eight-time Grammy nominees, as it signals their departure from Atlantic Records after two decades to return to their independent foundations via ANTI- Records. Produced by John Congleton, the record was captured in a swift three-week burst of sessions across Los Angeles and the band members’ home studios. To celebrate the news, the quintet has shared the propulsive lead single “Riptides,” a track frontman Benjamin Gibbard describes as an exploration of personal struggle amidst global tragedy.

Of the single, Gibbard describes,

“Riptides is about the challenge of dealing with personal struggles as the world around us experiences tragedy and loss on an unfathomable scale. And how when these two elements intertwine themselves in our psyches, it feels utterly paralyzing.”

The announcement follows the massive success of their Transatlanticism 20th-anniversary tour, an experience the band says “exorcised” any lingering nostalgia. Bassist Nick Harmer noted that the new project captures the confidence of the band’s earliest days, focusing on creative intuition over commercial pressure. Alongside the album news, Death Cab for Cutie have confirmed an autumn UK/European tour, with tickets set to go on sale this Friday at 10 AM local time. Fans can expect a reclamation of the core ethos that has defined their 30-year career as they transition from their celebrated 2022 effort, Asphalt Meadows, into this raw and refined new chapter.
