Ásgeir Trausti, or more recently just by the mononym Ásgeir, an Icelandic singer, will release an English language version of his successful debut album Dýrð í dauðaþögn under the title In the Silence on 27 January 2014 via One Little Indian.
At just 21 years of age Ásgeir is a sensation in his domestic music scene with almost 10% of the Icelandic population now owning his debut album – the biggest and fastest-selling debut by a home grown artist. Ásgeir’s music is somehow described as a mix of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon with a touch of James Blake.
Listen to the first release outside Iceland King and Cross (Leyndarmál) or the new single Torrent (Nýfallið Regn) – out 16th December – via the soundcloud player below.
I remember like it was yesterday when I heard the melodic folk pop song Dýrð í dauðaþögn for the first time. I was in Stockholm in a tiny record store flipping through the albums while they played a song in a language I didn’t understand but I get connected with his music immediately. The lack of understanding the language didn’t stop me from buying his album as I felt in love with it while standing in the shop. Thanks to the lovely Swedish people I came across Ásgeir. Nevertheless I like to listen to Icelandic I am really looking forward to the English version to better understand what the young Icelander is singing about.
You can download The Toe Rag Acoustic Sessions recorded live and acoustic in London, February 2013, for free from Bandcamp.
Ásgeir will be promoting his album with a tour through Europe this fall. I hope to see him in Berlin.
