The face of Aussie indie are back. Spacey Jane’s newest collection of gorgeous, anthemic indie-rock is entitled ‘If That Makes Sense’ and it’ll be released into the world on May 9th via Concord. An album filled with sun-soaked guitars and songs to scream along to – Spacey Jane have taken their brand of jangly indie and defined it on their third record.

After an ethereal introduction track, ‘Through My Teeth’ welcomes us to the party. The ultimate indie-pop summer singalong, that jangle and those twangy chords will play on your mind for weeks after the first listen. Tied in with a shout-in-the-shower chorus, the album’s final single has it all, making it one of the finest efforts in its genre this year.

‘Whateverrr’ is a serious highlight. Frontman Caleb Harper’s vocals are complemented beautifully by some crispy harmonies and smooth-like-honey backing vocals. Arguably the catchiest track on the entire thing, catch yourself humming it day-by-day and screaming “you can’t talk to me like that anymore/calling me crazy, saying fuck you before slamming the door” with a playful snarl.

‘All The Noise’ continues in the same vein. Possibly the biggest earworm instrumentally the band has ever made, it is soul-destroying lyrically, yet the music is edgy, filled with roaring guitars and booming drums. Your head won’t stop bopping, and your feet certainly won’t stop moving. This is the type of song that made the world fall in love with indie-rock music, and it’s absolutely continuing its legacy.

“‘Impossible To Say’ and the earlier single ‘How To Kill Houseplants’ complement each other beautifully, representing two halves of a stunning whole. The band has truly mastered the art of creating uplifting and glorious tracks, making even their slower, ‘sad’ songs feel like complete bangers.

‘If That Makes Sense’ just makes sense. Hit after hit, it never coasts, feeling like the band at their very best – but perhaps they’re just getting better and better. ‘I Can’t Afford To Lose You’ is gut-wrenchingly bittersweet with a comparatively wrecking chorus with its opposing vigorous punch-the-air drums, making for a raw, heart-on-the-sleeve track.

‘So Much Taller’ is probably the most soul-destroying track lyrically on the entire record, but you’ll still want to two-step to it. “You will never be enough/You will never be loved/And the fact that you’re trying is embarrassing enough” is enough to make the smiliest of souls frown, yet it’s followed by one of the happiest, upbeat choruses the band have ever curated.

“If That Makes Sense” offers a deeply satisfying and multifaceted listening experience. Whether you’re in the mood to dance away your worries or belt out your feelings, Spacey Jane has crafted a collection that resonates on multiple levels. Consider your summer soundtrack sorted.
