Run For Cover Records has officially announced I Will Swim to You: A Tribute to Jason Molina, an expansive compilation set for release on September 5th. This forthcoming album serves as a heartfelt homage to one of the most profoundly influential songwriters of the last three decades, featuring twelve reverent covers by a selection of modern indie’s most compelling artists.
In anticipation of the album’s release, Run For Cover has immediately unveiled two tracks. Fans can now experience MJ Lenderman’s rendition of “Just Be Simple,” originally from Songs: Ohia’s seminal 2003 album Magnolia Electric Co., alongside Sun June’s take on “Leave The City,” which appeared on Magnolia Electric Co.’s 2005 follow-up, What Comes After The Blues.
Jason Molina’s vast musical legacy, spanning his work as Songs: Ohia, The Magnolia Electric Co., and his solo material, continues to be a driving force in the contemporary music landscape. His unmistakable voice, poignant lyrical depth, and gift for crafting haunting melodies can be heard resonating across genres – from the thriving alt-country and Americana scenes to indie rock, lo-fi, and slowcore. I Will Swim to You provides a powerful snapshot of this enduring influence, featuring passionate interpretations by a diverse roster including Lenderman, Sun June, Horse Jumper of Love, Sadurn, Hand Habits, and Friendship, drawing from his extensive discography. Crucially, 10% of all profits from the album will be donated to MusiCares®, a non-profit organisation that had previously assisted Molina during his battle with addiction.
Adding a visual and collector’s dimension to the tribute, the album’s cover art features a stunning painting by William Schaff, the same artist behind the iconic owl imagery on Molina’s Magnolia Electric Co. album. Beyond the digital and standard physical release of I Will Swim to You, Run For Cover is also preparing a special physical-only split 7″ vinyl. This exclusive offering will feature a never-before-released demo recording of “The Last 3 Human Words” by Molina on its A-side, paired with MJ Lenderman’s “Just Be Simple” cover on the B-side, creating a truly unique item for dedicated fans.
