Hull’s four-piece, Bdrmm, are back with ‘Lake Disappointment,’ the third track from their genre-bending upcoming album, Microtonic. Set for release on February 28th via Mogwai’s Rock Action label, the album is available for pre-order now.

Following the atmospheric tracks ‘John on the Ceiling’ and ‘Infinity Peaking,’ ‘Lake Disappointment’ displays a band expanding their sonic horizons with intense electronics. This third single is not merely a sonic transition; it serves as a declaration. Inspired by their support for Daniel Avery and a collective rave at Field Day, Bdrmm have incorporated dance music elements, building on the electronic direction suggested in their earlier work.

Of the track, the band’s Ryan Smith states,

Lake Disappointment is probably the most aggressive and exciting song we’ve conjured up. I remember sending it to Alex (our producer) and I’ve never seen him so excited about a track. It was such a dream to work on. I feel like within all the melancholy of the record there is a lot of anger too. This is us getting that out, and saying fuck you to the wrongdoers.

Of the video, he continues,

I will always hold such a great memory of shooting the video. We ventured to an abandoned warehouse in Sheffield and recruited an amazing production team and created our own dystopian TV shopping channel (under strong orders our bosses at MicroTech). We must have been sick for a week after from being stood around in the cold for 12 hours in hospital gowns, but it was worth it. No pain, no gain (we’re still waiting for the gain).

Microtonic arrives after 2023’s critically acclaimed I Don’t Know. Praised by Consequence as “one of their most enticing successes yet” and hailed by Rolling Stone UK as “a chaotic, thrilling evolution,” the album, featuring the BBC Radio 6 Music-playlisted single ‘It’s Just A Bit Of Blood’ solidified their growth. Brooklyn Vegan even named it Album Of The Week, declaring I Don’t Know a significant leap forward from their debut, proving they’d not only avoided the sophomore slump but delivered a vastly superior second album.
