Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter zzzahara unveils their new album, Spiral Your Way Out, set for release on January 10, 2025 via Lex Records. The album is a follow-up to their 2023 effort Tender, allowing the singer-songwriter to evolve. Accompanying the announcement, zzzahara has shared the album’s lead single, ‘Ghosts’.
Emotionally raw, Spiral Your Way Out delves into the aftermath of a tumultuous relationship. zzzahara confronts themes of self-doubt, manipulation, and emotional turmoil. Recorded over three months, the album serves as a cathartic outlet for pent-up frustrations.
“I was going through a really tough time, and I felt isolated,” zzzahara shares about the period leading up to the album. “When I finally got into the studio, I had a lot of anger – towards the person who hurt me, but mostly towards myself for not walking away. I think I just let things happen, and I was mad at myself for isolating myself for so long and not standing up for myself. So, I poured all of that into the record.”
The lead single, ‘Ghosts’, is a poignant and relatable track about the complexities of a toxic relationship. With its stripped-back arrangement and powerful vocals, the song captures the emotional intensity of the experience. The accompanying 3D-animated video, directed by Hannah Bon, visually explores zzzahara’s descent into a surreal dream world.
Spiral Your Way Out represents a significant evolution, both sonically and emotionally. While zzzahara’s songs have always been characterised by a warm, intimate sound, this album introduces a newfound ambition and boldness.
Departing from their usual solo approach, zzzahara collaborated with a diverse group of producers, including Jorge Elbrecht, Sarah Tudzin, Alex Craig, and Franco Reid. These talented individuals helped expand zzzahara’s intimate songwriting into a more expansive and dynamic sound.
“A lot of the instrumentation is either a group effort or just two of us in the room, so it felt great to have that weight off my shoulders,” zzzahara explains. “It was comfortable to have them guide and enhance what I’d written.”
