London newcomers Y have signed to Hideous Mink Records (Alien Chicks, Opus Kink) and SO Recordings (Enter Shikari, Deadletter, Big Special), and announced their debut EP ‘Y’ (pre-order vinyl here), set for release on April 4th. The title-track ‘Why’ is out now, following its BBC 6 Music Steve Lamacq premiere.
Emerging from the creative crucible of the capital, and comprising members from or involved with Fat White Family, Meatraffle, and Pregoblin, Y is a genre-defying band founded by Adam Brennan and Sophie Coppin during a period of isolation. The duo discovered an uncanny synergy in their music-making, blending shared tastes with contrasting stylistic approaches. This paradox has birthed the eclectic, unpredictable sound that defines Y – playfully described as “wonk rock,” “Gameboy thrash,” and even “Egyptian wedding music.”
Speaking of the new single, the band explain,
‘Why’ is a song that calls everything into question – It’s an ode to the unanswered, endless questions from the trivial, to the deepest philosophical mysteries. Saxophone dominates the chorus as synth and guitar take the space of the traditional lyrical verses as ultimately we found THE question can only be answered through music.
Newly-signed to Hideous Mink Records and SO Recordings, Y will be celebrating their debut single release with a show at their home stage of The Windmill, Brixton later this week (January 24th). Following this, they embark on a February tour supporting Fat Dog and Keg, culminating in a headlining show at London’s iconic 100 Club on April 24th.
