Wolf Alice have announced their highly anticipated fourth studio album, ‘The Clearing’, slated for release on August 29th via RCA Records. Coinciding with the album announcement, the band has shared their captivating new single, ‘Bloom Baby Bloom’.
This fresh track, marking their first musical offering in three years, was conceived in Seven Sisters, North London. The entirety of ‘The Clearing’ was then meticulously recorded in Los Angeles under the guidance of the esteemed Grammy Award-winning producer Greg Kurstin.
‘Bloom Baby Bloom’ showcases a notable evolution in frontwoman Ellie Rowsell’s vocal delivery, hinting at the sonic textures and thematic explorations that await listeners on their forthcoming album. This new single offers an intriguing glimpse into the band’s continued artistic growth.
Of this evolution, Rowsell states,
I wanted a rock song, to focus on the performance element of a rock song and sing like Axl Rose, but to be singing a song about being a woman, I’ve used the guitar as a shield in the past, playing it has perhaps been some way to reject the ‘girl singer in band’ trope, but I wanted to focus on my voice as a rock instrument so it’s been freeing to put the guitar down and reach a point where I don’t feel like I need to prove that I’m a musician.
Wolf Alice’s announcement describes ‘The Clearing’ as a multifaceted album, embracing both lightheartedness and gravity, irony and sincerity. It is also positioned as a significant step forward for a band whose previous explorations of love, loss, and human connection have already powerfully defined the coming-of-age experience for an entire generation of listeners.
The visually striking video for ‘Bloom Baby Bloom’ was helmed by director Colin Solal Cardo, renowned for his innovative work with artists such as Charli XCX, Robyn, Christine & The Queens, and Phoenix. The captivating visual features choreography by the Emmy Award-winning Ryan Heffington, adding another layer of artistic depth to the release.
Fans eager to witness Wolf Alice’s new material live will have the opportunity to do so this summer, as the band is confirmed to perform at both Radio 1’s Big Weekend in their current location of Liverpool and the iconic Glastonbury Festival in June. The band are also set to play three shows in Ireland next week.
