Today, France’s Unschooling share the third, and final, single from their upcoming debut album, New World Artifacts, arriving in the form of ‘Excommunicated’. The single follows on from the previously released ‘Brand New Storm’, and ‘Ribbon Road’.
‘Excommunicated’ is a long piece which concludes side A of the band’s album, speaking of the track, lead vocalist and guitarist Vincent Fevrier states:
This quasi-religious piece is interspersed with a very raw and bruitist part. The end drone seems to plunge us directly into darkness until clearing spreads and snaps us out of torpor.
Since their emergence with their self-released Defensive Designs cassette in 2019, the French 5-piece has solidified their reputation in France and beyond, establishing themselves as one of the most exciting new acts. New World Artifacts is a collection of lo-fi post-punk tracks that holds a running time of just 30 minutes, a fun, entertaining listen that never takes itself too seriously.
The track follows on from previous single, Ribbon Road, the second to be taken from their upcoming debut album, New World Artifacts, which is set for release this October via Bad Vibrations. The release follows on from the release of the album’s lead single, Brand New Storm.
Allowing the band to steer away from post-punk and into an inviting, jazz-infused track bought to life by a combination of two basses, two drums and guitars in unison with saxophones, the single is a tribute to the ‘famous Mario Kart course of the same name’, explains Unschooling’s lead vocalist, Vincent Fevrier.
The band’s upcoming, debut album clocks in at 30 minutes long, and is a collection of lo-fi post-punk with underlying pop melodies that see Unschooling return to a sound that is less calibrated and less obvious. Debut album out on October 6th
The debut album, New World Artifacts, is set for release on October 6th via Bad Vibrations Records, and follows on from the band’s self-released cassette, Defensive Designs, from 2019, and a successful Random Acts of Total Control EP in 2021.
Partnering the announcement, the band have shared the album’s lead single – arriving in the form of Brand New Storm. Of the single, the band’s Vincent Fevrier states:
Brand New Storm is a quintessential ‘stop and smell the flowers’ track taken from New World Artifacts. The typical pop structure denotes a soft deluge of guitars, saxophone and organ overdubs but the whole thing is no less melodic. It’s a real return to the roots of my twee-pop influences. The track has a nostalgic vibe which is accentuated by a rather lo-fi recording which is a deliberate act. Brand New Storm is an invitation to let go despite the ups and downs of a romantic relationship, and the fear of commitment. A call to step into the unknown.
