Alan Duggan Borges, guitarist for the acclaimed Irish band Gilla Band and a respected producer, has announced a new solo project: The Null Club. Duggan Borges has spent recent years crafting music that blends noise, techno, experimental hip-hop, and post-punk, utilizing a collection of vintage synths, drum machines, and guitars. The Null Club’s self-titled debut EP, featuring collaborations with other artists, is set for release on April 4th. Among the guests are Faris Badwan of The Horrors, Valentine Caulfield of Mandy, Indiana, and ELUCID of Armand Hammer. The project’s debut single, ‘Slip Angle,’ featuring vocals by Caulfield, has been released today.

The EP will be released independently on a label run by Duggan Borges and his wife, limited to 500 hand-stamped, white-label 12” records. It was mixed by Daniel Fox (Gilla Band) and mastered by Jamie Hyland (M(h)aol). Duggan Borges performed and recorded all instrumentals in his Dublin home and rehearsal studio. Vocals were recorded in various locations, including studios and artists’ homes in New York City, London, and Manchester.

Of the single, Duggan Borges states,

This would be the most techno inspired track. I tired to mix techno and noise with this one. I first saw Mandy, Indiana in Manchester at the psych fest in 2021. We managed to say hello, and from there I reached out to Val to see if she would be interested in working on the track. Thankfully she was into it. I sent her on the instrumental and she came back with rough vocals using the mic from headphones for phones. We re-recorded the vocals in her home in Manchester in 2021 surrounded by her cats, but actually kept some of the headphone takes in the track.

To bring The Null Club’s music to the stage, Duggan Borges will embark on a series of solo shows across Ireland and England. These performances will feature reworked versions of tracks from the EP, as well as unreleased material. His live setup will include a wide array of synths, noise machines, guitars, and pedals, all routed through various amps to create a dynamic and immersive sonic experience. Tickets for these shows are on sale now.
