The German city of Kassel isn’t really famous for anything, least of all its music scene. Nonetheless, locals Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch became an international success story in 2013 with the release of their acclaimed debut album Sadnecessary, which featured the international smash Stolen Dance. Expectations for their sophomore album Blossom (out March 17th via Ignition Records) are expectably high.
Milky Chance – Doing Good
Two years on the road have shaped Milky Chance. While the overall sound on Blossom is pretty much the same as before, the lyrics reflect on their time spent abroad. On Ego, for instance, Rehbein processes being apart from his lover while in the US while Cocoon reflects on the band’s wish to retreat to a quite place to work on new music.
Milky Chance continue their nu-folk/folktronica sound but there is new elements here and there. While there is more of the reggae elements that marked their debut, Spanish-type guitars (Doing Good) and world music vibes (Clouds) have found their way onto Blossom as have female vocals provided by British vocalist Izzy Bizu on mid-tempo jam Bad Things. Stay, on the other hand, is a stripped down acoustic ballad that puts Rehbein’s signature raspy vocals to the fore while Piano Song is, as the title suggests, untypicaly piano driven.
Milky Chance – Cocoon
The band’s progress and growth, personally and as a band, is evident throughout the record. While Blossom offers all of which made Sadnecessary the success it was, Rehbein and Dausch aren’t afraid to push their boundaries a little. That said, they could push just a little more and offer more electronica or instrumental sections instead of relying on Rehbein’s vocals all the way through.
Previously released tracks such as Blossom, Ego, Doing Good and particularly Cocoon are clearly standout tracks ready to appeal to fans of hit single Stolen Dance. Like its predecessor Sadnecessary, Blossom will woo the festival crowds this coming season and offers enough to please fans old and new.
