Matt Berninger, best known as the frontman and lyricist of The National, has announced the release of his second solo album, “Get Sunk,” slated for May 30th via Book/Concord Records. The album, produced and co-written by Grammy Award-winning engineer Sean O’Brien, promises a rich sonic landscape and introspective lyrical content, exploring the complexities of the human experience.
“Get Sunk” was crafted in a Silverlake, CA basement studio, fostering a collaborative environment with a diverse group of musicians. Notable contributors include Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Julia Laws (Ronboy), Kyle Resnick (The National, Beirut), Booker T. Jones, and members of The Walkmen, Walter Martin and Paul Maroon.
The album’s lead single, “Bonnet of Pins,” showcases Berninger’s signature lyrical style, painting vivid scenes with meticulous detail. The track features imagery of cigarettes, styrofoam cups, and “Nabokov cocktails,” highlighting the artist’s ability to blend poignant themes of grief with moments of dark humor.
In support of “Get Sunk,” Berninger has announced an extensive North American and UK/EU tour. The tour kicks off on May 19th at The Showbox in Seattle, with European dates beginning August 22nd in Dublin, Ireland. Berninger will be accompanied by the core band that contributed to the album’s recording, with Ronboy (Julia Laws) serving as the opening act.
A members-only presale for The National’s Cherry Tree fan club commences tomorrow, followed by a general public on-sale this Friday, March 14th at 10:00 AM local time.
