Rotterdam-based noise-punk quartet Library Card have officially announced their forthcoming album, Peeling An Orange In Just One Go, set for release on November 6th via AT EASE. To mark the announcement, the Dutch four-piece has unveiled their searing new single, “People Pleaser.” The track serves as a powerful preview of the new record, marking a shift from the band’s signature wry, free-associative songwriting into a more candid, explosive exploration of festering anguish and postponed combustion.
Musically, “People Pleaser” gyrates through dizzying platitudes before taking a steep nosedive into pure, noise-laden distress, perfectly punctuated by a primal scream from vocalist Lot Van Teylingen. Since forming in the summer of 2021, the band, completed by guitarist Mitchell Quitz, bassist Kat Kalkman, and drummer Emre Karayalçin, has crafted an aerodynamic noise-punk sound that frequently evokes the anxieties of modern city life. On their latest offering, they channel that anxiety to push back against the societal expectations of agreeability, culminating in a massive, shared release of suppressed rage.
Of the album, Lot explains,
People Pleaser deals with the theme of having to suppress one’s anger for the sake of staying modest and likeable. For the sake of the patriarchy, for the sake of avoiding confrontation, for the sake of fitting a framework that has been established by a society that prefers its members to be agreeable and silent, and punishes them when they do not comply. We’ve become so good at suppressing our rage that it feels alien to us to even think about expressing it, even though it eats away at our insides. In response to that, we scream. And we scream loudly.
Library Card have quickly built a reputation for delivering the warmth and wit often missing from their post-punk-adjacent contemporaries. Their distinctive sound and dynamic live performances have already garnered praise from major tastemakers including NME, The Line of Best Fit, DORK, and BBC 6 Music’s Iggy Pop. This mounting momentum has translated into a stacked live resume, featuring standout appearances at major festivals like SXSW, Le Guess Who?, Dour Festival, and Best Kept Secret, as well as coveted support slots alongside heavy-hitters like OSEES, Sports Team, and Just Mustard.
