Barely a whisper after her compelling single “Summer,” Iona Zajac explodes back onto the scene today with “Bang,” her second release of the year. This track isn’t just new music; it’s a defiant burst of sexually liberated joy, a striking departure from her haunting folk stylings. As Zajac candidly puts it, “A good bang at the end of a boring day won’t fix your life, but it might help.” It’s a statement rooted in raw honesty and a surrealist edge, underscoring Zajac’s audacious evolution.

Of the track, Zajac continues,

I wrote bang when I realised sex could be good. While that feels like something that should be taken for granted, it wasn’t for me as a young woman growing up. I think that’s the case for a lot of people. Confusing clashing bodies, often shadowed by the evil teenage world of slut shaming. I hated my body and I couldn’t figure out how to enjoy it. Then suddenly it was bliss, the shame was gone and I wanted to shout about it. So I wrote Bang. For the video, we wanted to keep it simple, it’s a celebration of female pleasure and presents a day in the life of a bored woman who loves to bang!

The past few months have been a whirlwind for Zajac. After her first release in three years, she embarked on a completely sold-out, 25-date academy tour supporting Alison Moyet, performing to the biggest crowds of her career at iconic venues like London’s Palladium. Last December, she joined The Pogues for a landmark 40th-anniversary show, later reprising her role for a seven-date tour alongside a new lineup of Irish folk luminaries, including Lankum’s Daragh Lynch and Nadine Shah. This historic run saw the new Pogues members, including Zajac, cement their bond by tattooing “Pogue” on their skin, symbolising a new chapter. Zajac will continue this journey, touring the USA with The Pogues this September.

The whirlwind continues for Iona Zajac, who is set to resume her live performances from July 4th. Her packed schedule features high-profile collaborations: three support dates at the Pavilion Theatre alongside fellow The Pogues vocalist Lisa O’Neill, a captivating return to the stage with Alison Moyet at London’s Kew Gardens, and a significant North American run with The Pogues across the USA and Canada.
