Bedford and London’s gothic quintet, Dog Race, have announced their debut EP, “Return The Day,” set for release on June 6th via Fascination Street Records. Today also marks the arrival of their new single, “Return The Day (Colours),” a spectral and intense preview of the EP’s title track.
“Return The Day (Colours)” is a fierce, rapid outburst, akin to a sudden shock. It paints a stark picture of joy’s descent into monotony, where creativity wanes and vibrant experiences lose their clarity.
Fueled by relentless, driving drums, abrasive synthesisers, and an unyielding bassline, the track embodies a sensation of uncontrolled descent. Ethereal sonic textures drift above this turbulent foundation, suspended between forward momentum and a pervasive melancholy, creating Dog Race’s characteristic feeling of urgent, breathless unease and claustrophobia.
Of the EP, vocalist Katie Healy states,
A soundscape born from sleepless nights, intrusive thoughts, and the quiet war between the mind and the world around me. Each track pulls at the threads of cultish beliefs and everyday expectations, exposing the weight they place on someone already battling inner turmoil.
Following the chilling operatic tones of “The Leader” and the stark theatricality of “It’s The Squeeze,” Dog Race’s upcoming EP, “Return The Day,” delves even deeper into unsettling territory. Praised by BBC Radio 6 and Anthony Fantano, the band crafts a soundscape where operatic vocals intertwine with distorted guitars and uneasy synths. Produced by Ali Chant and released via Fascination Street Records, the EP captures Dog Race fully immersed in themes of psychological unrest and emotional paralysis. This collection solidifies their dark and compelling artistic vision.
