Guided by their mantra of “Always dancey. Always loud. Always sexy,” Bathing Suits are making a powerful entrance into the club scene. Armed with a barrage of abrasive guitars and pulsating techno beats, the band’s new single, “I Can Be a Freak,” arrives on August 7th. The track is already a live staple and a definitive anthem for the group.
Working with producer Benny Howell (also known as DJ Subaru), the band has transformed Estelle’s “Freak” into a snarling, pounding monster. The new single is a chaotic mix of big beats, deep basslines, and blistering feedback, showcasing a sound that is as influenced by contemporary post-punk acts like Model/Actriz as it is by the brazen pop of the early 2010s.
Freyja Belvins explains,
I can be a freak’ came to me fast. It’s an energetic, noisy song about being downright nasty and weird (the meaning reinvents itself constantly). I wrote it using synthesisers for the melodies and sampling Freak by Estelle (love her and love that song) before bringing it to the band and developing it together. After playing this song together for monthsss we brang it to the studio with the best DJ and producer ever DJ Subaru who produced our previous single. #keepitfreaky.
Borne from their hometown’s DIY party scene, Bathing Suits first rehearsed in the same basements where they hosted homemade club nights. These spaces were equipped with powerful sound systems and elaborate lighting rigs, which helped the band develop their distinctive, high-octane sound.
In recent months, the band has been consistently touring across the UK, sharing stages with acts like Man/Woman Chainsaw and The Umlauts. They also recently completed their first EU shows in northern France and performed a sold-out headline show at Dublin’s Workmans Club.
