Iona Zajac has released her latest single, “Murder Mystery,” offering a glimpse into her highly anticipated debut album, Bang, due for release on 21st November.

Having first gained attention as part of folk duo Avocet, Zajac has since forged an impressive solo career, performing alongside artists such as Alison Moyet, Lankum, and Lisa O’Neill. She recently joined The Pogues on tour, taking the stage at venues including Barrowland Ballroom and Brixton Academy, and completing a run along the American East Coast with the legendary band.

Murder Mystery explores unsettling everyday fears and questions of agency and femininity. Zajac describes the track as,

“a surreal exploration of discomfort. A fearless dive into the scary everyday fears women live with. It’s a song that plays with questions about a woman’s place in the world and the space we occupy — of femininity, of reputation, of fear and defiance. Where Scandi Noire meets police corruption in a Milk Murder.”

The single is accompanied by a striking video directed by Zillah Rauter, featuring a character embodying Zajac’s alter ego.

“For the video we created my alter ego — a woman who lives in her fearless own world. It’s both perfect and revolting, and it’s absolutely hers. She sleeps standing up, she keeps her iron in the fridge, she wears fake talons on her feet… She does exactly what she likes,”

With Bang, Zajac is set to showcase a bold, uncompromising voice, blending personal experience with wider narratives of resilience and reclamation.
