The Last Dinner Party, whose rapid, BRIT Award-winning ascent has been hailed as one of the most thrilling introductions to a new British band in decades, are setting the stage for their next chapter. The acclaimed quintet has unveiled their latest single, ‘Second Best,’ a track lifted from their highly anticipated forthcoming album, From The Pyre, due out October 17th, 2025, via Island Records. The release confirms that their unparalleled success story, which includes selling out multiple global tours and three shows at London’s Eventim Apollo, shows no signs of slowing down.

Penned by TLDP guitarist Emily Roberts, the sound of ‘Second Best’ is directly informed by the angular, sophisticated pop riffs of legendary group Sparks. After Roberts created the foundation, the track was enhanced with additional musical and lyrical depth from Abi and Lizzie, before Aurora’s buoyant, dancing keys and Georgia’s formidable bassline elevated the arrangement.

Of the track, Emily states,

I wish I could go back and say to myself that I am worth more than that, and that no one needs to accept being second best, I hope that the song captures the pain, anger and despair I felt but most importantly the defiance and satisfaction I now have in being able to immortalise this person in a song and to look back on the situation with more maturity.

Lyrically, the song dives into the fraught “push and pull” of toxic obsession. It details the emotional dilemma of loving someone despite knowing they will inevitably cause pain and allowing that betrayal to happen because the romantic attachment is too strong to sever. This emotional complexity is delivered with an expansive, energetic chorus, confirming the band’s ability to twist the familiar into something both eerily seductive and musically explosive.
