A newly released in-depth survey, “Music Fans’ Voice,” has delivered a stark and comprehensive insight into the behaviours and opinions of the UK’s live music concertgoers, revealing a passionate audience deeply concerned about the future of the industry, particularly regarding ticket pricing and resale practices.
The extensive initiative, commissioned by a coalition of local authorities across major UK cities including Greater Manchester, London, and Liverpool, and built upon recommendations from a parliamentary review, surveyed over 8,000 fans nationwide. The findings paint a picture of an audience with an enduring love for live music, recognising its vital cultural and international significance, with a striking 68% believing the UK leads the world in the sector.
However, the survey also unearthed significant discontent, with overwhelming consensus among fans regarding the need for reform in the secondary ticketing market. A massive 97% advocate for the legalisation of face-value ticket resale, while 91% are calling for legislation to outright ban the reselling of tickets at inflated prices. Dynamic pricing also faces strong opposition, with 91% wanting it outlawed and a mere 11% of those who purchased dynamically priced tickets feeling it was adequately explained.
Despite these frustrations, the survey highlights a deep commitment from fans to the live music ecosystem’s long-term health. A significant 84% attend shows to support artists and the scene, with 71% specifically motivated by supporting their local music communities. There is also strong support for protecting key venues, with 94% believing significant music venues and nightclubs should have protected status, and 93% backing a levy of £1 from stadium and arena shows to fund the grassroots sector directly.
A worrying trend identified by the survey is the impact of the cost of living crisis on attendance, with over 50% citing financial constraints as a barrier to attending more shows. A clear majority (91%) believe lower ticket prices would encourage greater participation.
The “Music Fans’ Voice” survey underscores the critical role of fan engagement in the live music industry, revealing a passionate audience deeply invested in its future. However, the findings also present a clear call for action on issues of ticket pricing and transparency, with fans increasingly selective due to affordability concerns. The survey suggests that addressing these issues, alongside supporting venues and artists, is crucial for maintaining the vibrancy and sustainability of the UK’s beloved live music scene.
