NOTHING Explores Industrial Grit on New Single “toothless coal”

Shoegaze heavyweights NOTHING have kicked off 2026 with a sonic pivot, releasing their latest single “toothless coal” ahead of their fifth studio album, a short history of decay. Due out February 27 via Run For Cover, the track introduces a grinding, industrial aesthetic reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine, a sharp departure from the Madchester-inspired grooves of previous single “cannibal world” and the raw acoustic intimacy of “purple strings.” Frontman Domenic “Nicky” Palermo describes the upcoming record as a “widescreen reckoning with time, truth, and the body’s slow unravelling,” marking the band’s most sonically expansive work to date.

The new era finds NOTHING recharged by a solidified lineup featuring Doyle Martin and Cam Smith (both of Cloakroom), Bobb Bruno (Best Coast), and drummer Zachary Jones. This iteration of the band captures Palermo at his most unflinching as he confronts personal themes of ageing and illness with startling clarity. To support the release, the group will head to Japan this February to share the stage with Whirr before launching an extensive North American headline tour and a follow-up run in the UK and Ireland this spring.

The touring cycle will culminate in the band’s own Slide Away Festival, set to hit New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles in May. The festival doubles as a 10th-anniversary celebration of their seminal album Tired of Tomorrow, featuring a high-profile lineup of alternative legends including Hum, Chapterhouse, and Swirlies. With support on the North American leg from Full Body 2, Cryogeyser, and Violent Magic Orchestra, the band is set to deliver their most intense live presentation yet.
