Tor Maries, the Bristol-based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist behind the project Billy Nomates, has announced the forthcoming album Metalhorse. The album is scheduled for release on May 16, 2025, via Invada Records. Metalhorse is Billy Nomates’ third studio release, following 2023’s critically acclaimed CACTI and her self-titled 2020 debut.

The announcement coincides with the release of the album’s lead single, ‘The Test,’ which premiered on BBC Radio 6 Music with Lauren Laverne. ‘The Test’ has a heartland rock sound, featuring a driving rhythm section, a prominent bass line, and piano accents. Maries’ vocal delivery is described as powerful and defiant, with lyrics such as “A heart is an engine” highlighting the song’s rebellious nature. Written during a period of personal and professional upheaval, ‘The Test’ reflects the emotional turmoil of the past 18 months and Billy Nomates’ resilience in the face of adversity.

Maries describes it in almost spiritual terms, stating,

It’s working at something against the odds and feeling like someone’s helping you from the other side, and if they see you that’s the test. I really feel that when we’re playing it live. Like, with everything that’s going on, I can’t believe this is surviving.

The track is accompanied by its visual, brought to life by the album’s creative director, Tom Skipp.
