Brighton’s psych-garage trio Oral Habit have returned with their latest single, ‘The Glove’, marking a new partnership with Falmouth’s DIY imprint Krautpop! Records. Recorded live to capture the loose, locked-in intensity of their acclaimed stage show, the track is a masterclass in fuzz-drenched innovation. Driven by Charlie Hales’ distinctive Vox Phantom guitar and the rhythmic engine of his brother Felix and bassist Tippi Lewis, the song laces a debonair, Josh Homme-esque swagger into their signature blend of 60s freakbeat and Krautrock. Mixed by Rory Lethbridge and mastered by Harry Hayes, the production feels raw and immediate, vibrating with the literal heat of the vintage amp valves used to create its sprawling sonic textures.
Of the single, Charlie Hales states,
“We wear gloves to touch what we want without fear of pain. But if you were to live a life gloved up, do you really know what it is to touch?”
The release follows a streak of momentum that has seen the band featured in The Guardian and championed by BBC 6Music and Radio X. Fresh from selling out headline dates in London and Brighton, the trio has also confirmed a nationwide summer tour to support the new single. Known for their “impatient, urgent innovation,” Oral Habit continue to push the boundaries of the psych-rock genre, broadening their horizons with proud-chested choruses and shifting time signatures that keep the listener on edge. ‘The Glove’ serves as their first new material since last spring’s Garage Frock EP, cementing their status as one of the most exciting grassroots acts in the UK today.
