Brighton’s critically lauded six-piece, Opus Kink, has unveiled their newest single, ‘I’m A Pretty Showboy,’ which premiered last night on BBC 6 Music and is out today via Hideous Mink Records and SO Recordings. The track is an eccentric, highly energetic preview of the sound that has defined the group, earning them accolades such as being named “One of the UK’s most exciting new bands” by Clash. This release caps off a productive summer of performances across the UK and Europe.
Of the track, frontman Angus Rogers states,
Here is our song, rock and roll music for the empty and stunning. A song about contempt, appetite, impotence and self-preservation through gyration. Enjoy superficially with your body and send the reeling mind on to hell! There is a world in which blues-riff basslines, big-band horns, Black Sabbath breakdowns, Samuel Beckett, breakbeat and trad folk refrains live happily together, perhaps not the one we live in, yet here we are. The first song recorded of what might be considered a ‘collection’ of some form. Stay with us now. On me, sailors!
The band’s sound is an evolving hybrid of punk driven by wildly diverse traditional genres. Opus Kink blends jazz, country, Latin, choral arrangements, and even Weimar cabaret into a sonic signature that is instantly recognisable yet deliberately hard to define. This unique cross-pollination sets them apart from their peers, prompting comparisons to pioneering post-punk and no-wave acts like The Pop Group and The Birthday Party. This complex, compelling style has resonated widely, securing the band three appearances on the coveted BBC 6 Music playlist.
Building on their growing momentum, Opus Kink recently spearheaded the ‘A Hideous Collective’ charity album, which raised money for the Music Venue Trust and the UK Artist Touring Fund. They are now focused on their largest headline concert to date: a performance at London’s iconic Electric Ballroom on November 7th. With critical support firmly in place, this major London show paves the way for a highly anticipated 2026 debut album release.
