The Unlikely Candidates Interview

The Unlikely Candidates recently released their new single High Low. The timely track was recorded during isolation in singer Kyle Morris’ closet and is about the loneliness of returning home from touring and finding that friends have moved on with their lives.

Formed in Fort Worth, Texas in 2008, The Unlikely Candidates have released three EP’s since 2013. Years of hardship and hard work finally yielded rabid fans and rave reviews. So the success of 2019’s single Novocaine (#1 on the alternative charts) is more than well deserved. The band has also toured with the likes of Sublime, The Offspring, the Dirty and Fall Out Boy.

We had a chat with singer Kyle about their new single High Low, coronavirus, and their future plans.

You have just released your new single ‘High Low’. Can you tell us how that track came about?

We were on tour and had a few days off in LA so we went to write with our producer. It was a good thing we did because one week later the country shut down and we had to head home from tour. I finished the lyrics in quarantine and then recorded it in my closet at home. Three months later we released it.

And was there a particular style you were looking for when you wrote it?

Not really, the song had a dreamy melancholy quality to it though, so as we developed it we kept that in mind with the production and lyrics.

When compared with your older material, how do you think this one sounds?

It definitely sounds different, but it has elements of the older stuff. Happyish sounding with sad lyrics. It’s cool to get a chill sounding song that can also take off in the way big radio songs do. That’s a balance that is newer for us. Our last single Novocaine had that as well.

Can we expect another EP or album from you in the near future?

I hope so! We have the album ready to go just writing more and making it’s as strong as possible. Should be out early next year.

The coronavirus outbreak has obviously affected everyone’s plans, but what have you got in store for the rest of the year?

We are writing a lot and we are still doing a live streaming series called Flatten The Hump Day every Wednesday at 3 central (9 PM BST). Coming up on week 18 of doing it!

And finally, what is your dream ambition to achieve as an artist?

Just make songs that I and others can relate to on a deep level and be able to do this for as long as we want to.
