The Killers have tried to stray from their trademark Indie sound in recent years, moving more towards new wave and 80s pop sensibilities, not dissimilar to the sound of Brandon Flowers solo material. 2017’s Wonderful Wonderful was a welcome return for the group after an extended hiatus and while not a perfect record, did manage to successfully transition the groups sound with lead single The Man quickly becoming a fan favourite.

Fire in Bone continues this experimental streak, following on from lead single Caution. It is perhaps a more experimental track with an extended intro isolating Flowers vocals and a background drum beat.  The song kicks into gear after the 1 minute mark with its distinctive chiming guitars and there is definitely more than a hint of Bruce Springsteen to be found, both in the beat and lyricisms.

While it is good to see The Killers continuing to evolve and experiment with their sound, this is perhaps the band at their most pedestrian, I felt it to be lacing something that made the band so distinctive and iconic on their earlier albums. Hopefully this is more of a blip as Caution was a promising sign of things to come on the new album.

The Killers’ new album Imploding The Mirage will be released on May 29th.
