As someone who prefers to find inspiration within personal experiences, Hastings-born singer and songwriter Sam Calver has been one of the few new artists of late to truly make a mark with his narrative-led songwriting, and has now returned to deliver his new EP Home.

Produced by British songwriting and production team Red Triangle (Lukas Graham, James Arthur, Emeli Sandé), Home was penned around the birth of his firstborn child. With an achingly simple message of affinity and kinship between father and son at its core, this new collection is inspired by unconditional love – an ode to the people and experiences that mean the most to us.

So with his new release dazzling us throughout, we sat down with him to find out more about it and what he has planned for the future.

Hi Sam, how are you today?

I’m very well thank you! Hope you are too!

For those that aren’t familiar with your music, how would you best describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as singer-songwriter, but that’s constantly evolving as I’m working on and trying out new things.

And what artists have influenced you the most over the years?

I grew up listening to so many different styles of music. My parents would play everything from Marvin Gaye, to Fleetwood Mac, Prince to Led Zeppelin. I literally listen to everything from rock, metal, hip-hop, soul and dance music.

You have just released your latest EP ‘HOME’. Can you tell us a little bit about how that release came about?

I wrote the 4 tracks featured on the HOME EP last year with my good friends Red Triangle. Together we worked hard to achieve the sound I was going for and by the end of it we had a body of work we were all proud of and that I wanted to release.

And are you proud of the results?

Very proud, they’re the most honest and heart-felt songs I’ve ever written. I feel like they’ve opened up new doors for me as a songwriter.

The lockdown has affected everyone’s plans right now, but what are you doing to stay productive throughout it and are you still able to work on new music?

Thankfully I have my own studio so I’m keeping my head down, writing new music and streaming live sessions every week on my Instagram. It’s a crazy time but I really feel it’s a great time for creativity to shine and get out what you put in.

And finally, what advice would you give other artists trying to stay productive during the crisis?

I would say that having spoken with lots of friends in the industry, right now we are all on a level playing field. There are no massive label video budgets or big studio sessions, it’s all about what you can create yourself with the tools you have. Time to shine!
