Roosevelt is fairly a newcomer. The Cologne based producer and DJ Marius Lauber was the drummer of German electro pop act Beat!Beat!Beat! that spawned radio hit Fireworks and saw the band tour across Europe. With Beat!Beat!Beat! on indefinite hiatus, Lauber has been DJ-ing and recording his own music under the name Moniker for the last couple of years.
He eventually dotted the line with Hot Chip’s label Greco-Roman via which he released his debut EP Elliot in 2013 to critical acclaim. Fast forward three years, Roosevelt finally drops his eponymous long player that is as 80s inspired as can be.
From the short intro to album closer Close, the record feels like a sequel to the Drive soundtrack and echoes the sentiments of a 20 something DJ who is up all night entertaining the crowd until the lights go on and the party is over.
Previous singles Fever, Colours, and Night Moves are the album’s standout tracks but that doesn’t mean that the rest of the album is of lesser quality. On the contrary, the 12 tracks merge into one another seamlessly and provide the perfect backdrop to a night out or a drive on a hot summer’s day.
Roosevelt is a remarkable effort that is only somewhat let down by it’s lack of originality. Merging club sounds with smooth synths and sombre vocals, Lauber has crafted a record that is essentially immaculate pop.
