Today, Dublins M(h)aol (pronounced male) have announced their debut EP, Gender Studies, and have shared its lead single and title track. The EP is set to be released digitally on October 29th, before getting a vinyl release on the 12th January as a dinked edition via the record label TULLE, who champion underrepresented voices within music.

The lead single, Gender Studies, is an urgent, chaotic number which is a response to how gender changes throughout our lifetimes and how people try to force gender binaries. A feminist journey, M(h)aol aim to shake up the male dominated post-punk narrative.

Its release comes hand in hand with the singles accompanying music video, a film noir style video which uses strong imagery to portray the constraints of gender roles and the expectations that form alongside them.

The EP was recorded in just 3 days, due to the band being located in different locations between Dublin, London and Bristol, covering hard hitting topics such as violence against women, misogyny within the music industry in both Ireland and the UK and trying to navigate life when youre not a cis, white man.

Speaking about the EP, lead vocalist Róisín Nic Ghearailt states:

Gender studies weaves past & present in an exploration of how the construct of gender shapes our lives. From feeling like you’re not performing your gender right, to the way it shapes how we move through the physical, sexual & romantic sphere.

Following the EP, M(h)aol will be playing a small batch of UK tour dates, making appearances in Bristol, Glasgow and Manchester before hitting the iconic Shacklewell Arms in London.
