Leeds quartet Marsicans have recently dotted the line with indie label Killing Moon (Fizzy Blood, Racing Glaciers) and are currently working on their debut album. New single Can I Stay Here Forever (pt.II) is the first taster of the forthcoming album and is probably their biggest and boldest song to date. Listen below.
Despite its upbeat sound, the song reflects Brexit and the climate crisis, as singer James Newbigging explains:
The UK has been a particularly divided place over the past few years and this song was born out of frustration with it all. My head was (still is) overloaded by news surrounding Brexit and an impending environmental disaster. This song is me wanting everyone to chill the fuck out, stop treating other people as the enemy and just get on with actually solving the problems we’re facing.
You may wonder where you can find the first part of Can I Stay Here Forever (pt.II). The short answer is: you can’t as it was never released. When asked why the track is titled part 2, Newbigging added:
An earlier version was part of the live set and was actually recorded. For some reason, it never saw the light of day. Part 2 is a tip of the hat to its predecessor.
2019 has been a massive year for the four piece who have headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds Festival and opened for the likes of Kaiser Chiefs and We Are Scientists. In March, the group will head to the US for the first time to play the legendary SXSW festival.
With their debut album on the horizon, things are shaping up nicely for the young band. Can I Stay Here Forever (pt.II) marks another step in what is shaping up to be a long and exciting journey.
