Yesterday saw Los Retros announce his new EP, Looking Back, set for release this spring via Stones Throw Records. The EP is set to offer listeners a glimpse into Mauri Tapia’s early days, with 7 tracks that were recorded during the same session as his breakout hit, Someone To Spend Time With, and the debut EP, Retrospect. He has also shared his brand new single It’s Got To Be You. Listen below.

Los Retros takes inspiration from his Mexican-American heritage and his upbringing in Oxnard, CA, drawing influences from vast influences from American soft rock records, to 90’s hip hop and beyond. Mauri’s goal is to create a sense of community and peacefulness. He states:

In my songs, I’m just trying to make a beautiful three-to-six minute moment that makes you feel more positive about life.

Now 21 years old, Mauri was just 16 when he started recording in his family’s living room on a four-track where he played all of the instruments himself and publishing the recordings online. The 2019 debut EP, Retrospect, drew praise from the likes of DAZED, The Sunday Times and Fader, with Remezcla describing Mauri as one of the “most exciting artists making indie today”.

The nostalgic feel continues with Looking Back, the EP is a woozy collection of gems that float by with their minimal yet intricate production as each song unfolds slowly, reminiscent of a different moment of time.
