Born into a musical family, with his second cousin a member of influential 60s group The Yardbirds and his father spending weekends performing across local pubs and socials clubs, Liverpool-based newcomer K I T was always destined for a life in music, and has now shares his incredibly infectious debut single Warm.
Developed by Rich Turvey (Blossoms, The Coral, Vistas) and Mike Halls (Clean Cut Kid), ‘Warm’ is one of those rare delights we just don’t hear enough of in the indie-rock world. Filled with joyous and rapturous hooks, all levelled with his own soaring vocal style, expect this to be the first of many great offerings from him to come.
So with the new single out and doing the rounds, we sat down with him to find out more about his new release and what we can expect from him next.
Hi K I T, how are you today?
I’m great thank you. It’s very warm out today and I’m always happy when it’s warm.
For those that haven’t heard of you yet, how would you best describe your sound and who have been your biggest influences so far?
I would describe my sound as ‘bedroom gone big.’ The songs are big but still have an element of being reserved. Maybe that sounds slightly strange, but I’m sure you’ll understand when you hear the songs. For me growing up, my influences don’t really show through at the moment. I grew up listening to blues music, so it’s obviously a big change to the music I create now. My heroes are artists like; Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King and John Mayer.
You have just released your debut single ‘Warm’. Can you tell us how that track came about?
I co-wrote the song with Mike Halls from the band Clean Cut Kid and producer/writer Rich Turvey who produces Blossoms and The Coral. Initially Mike and I wrote the first verse and chorus and made a demo, which we sent to Rich to see if he was interested in joining in, which gladly he was. We then finished the song as a trio. Mike and Rich co-produced the track.
And was there a particular style you were looking for when you wrote it?
I really love the modern American pop sound, it’s what I described earlier, it’s big but small at the same time. The likes of Lauv, Troye Sivan and Julia Michaels really influenced the direction I wanted to go in with the tunes.
Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?
Yes, an upcoming EP is on its way. I am releasing four singles that will compress into an EP. So, stay tuned!
The coronavirus outbreak has obviously affected everyone’s plans, but what have you got in store for the rest of the year?
For the rest of the year I want to build on the momentum and release the next three songs. I’m super excited for the world to hear them as I’m incredibly proud of the songs. I wish I could get out gigging and be going to gigs. Unfortunately, that’s looking unlikely in the near future.
And finally, where do you hope to see yourself this time next year?
Hopefully, I will have built a solid fanbase as I’m coming out of nowhere at the moment. Hoping to get writing again with Rich and Mike to release more songs and to be gigging. Obviously, with what’s going on in the world at the minute, live music is on hold so we will have to wait and see. I can’t wait to get out and play these songs live.
