Lily Somerville and Megan Markwick of Ider know how to stop you in your soul-searching tracks. By the opening song, you know Ider just gets it. They get every little thing you can’t quite put your finger on, and they put their whole hand on it with each lyric lifted by every beautifully placed alt-pop beat. Their debut album,  Emotional Education drops July 19th via Glassnote Records.

The opening track, Mirror, follows all the philosophical work on the object itself, from Black Mirror to Lacan, we can add this song to all the questions asked about our reflection. They sing “Can you remind me what I look like?” and “I keep looking in the mirror ’til I see myself”. It seems like there is always something in between us and how we find an identity.

Ider – Mirror

You’ve Got Your Whole Life Ahead of You circles the same theme. They sing  “love myself? Who the fuck is myself? Words have never hit harder. The self is always moving, shifting, and searching.

This album is growth, it is reflective, and it is self-aware. Saddest Generation nails the often unspoken details of having a relationship with a person, and their mental illness. No one comes out of these situations a hero.

We live in two worlds of love, the stories we’re told about it, and the reality of it. Ider knows that we’re precariously balancing on both at once. With one listen, Emotional Education will help you find security on shaky ground.
