Ireland’s Fontaines D.C. have today shared the opening track from their forthcoming album, A Hero’s Death, which is released on July 31st via Partisan Records. With beautiful, lonely intensity, I Don’t Belong is a complete opposite to the swagger that kicked off their debut album, Dogrel, last year. Listen below.
Speaking about the track, lead singer Grian Chatten states:
This song is a dismissal of the expectations of other people who consider themselves loyal to you.
The band wanted the track to be a ‘statement, ‘anti-“Big”’ (the opening track from their debut, Dogrel), which is why they put it as the opening track on A Hero’s Death. Continuing, Grian states:
This sentiment of not belonging can be liberating in a way, but it’s also lonely and sad. We wanted to show both sides of that type of loneliness.
The song is accompanied by a music video, directed remotely by the bands bassist, Connor Deegan III.
New album A Hero’s Death was produced in London by Dan Carey (black midi, Bat For Lashes) and the band’s debut album, Dogrel, debuted in the Top 10 of the UK Album Charts and earned the band a Mercury Prize nomination and numerous sold out tours worldwide – including selling out Brixton Academy in just 1 week.
