Following on from recent releases King and Heaven is Here, Florence + The Machine has just announced her new album Dance Fever will be released on May 13th. Coinciding with this news, Florence Welsh has also dropped brand new single My Love alongside the accompanying video. Watch and listen below.

Dance Fever was inspired by Florence’s fascination with the Renaissance phenomenon of choreomania, in which groups of people danced wildly to the point of exhaustion, collapse and death. She had just begun to work on the new record, when the outbreak of the pandemic forced her to retreat to London. It was in her London home, that the songs began to take a new shape, inspired by dance as much as of folk icons Lucinda Williams or Emmylou Harris.

My Love was originally written as an acoustic track which didn’t really resonate with Welch. It was Dave Bayley of Glass Animals, who suggested using synths and soon it became the massive floor stomper it is now.

Recent single ‘King’ reflects on gender-roles

Recent track King, the first to be revealed from the new album, reflects on femininity, family and the general conception of the traditionally gender-defined roles. The song comes with a stunning video, directed by Autumn de Wilde, shot at a construction site.

Florence Welch comments on the track:

As an artist, I never actually thought about my gender that much. I just got on with it. I was as good as the men and I just went out there and matched them every time. But now, thinking about being a woman in my 30s and the futureā€¦ I suddenly feel this tearing of my identity and my desires. That to be a performer, but also to want a family might not be as simple for me as it is for my male counterparts. I had modelled myself almost exclusively on male performers, and for the first time I felt a wall come down between me and my idols as I have to make decisions they did not.

King was teased in February when fans across the UK received post cards that had the words “King” and “Chapter 1” written on them. The official website teases more music, showing 14 cards in total while only the first one, labelled King, is turned over, hinting at the new album, a follow up to 2018’s High As Hope.

Florence + The Machine have been confirmed to headline several European festivals this summer.
