Bloc Party recently returned with the announcement of their sixth studio album Alpha Games, set for release on April 29th via Infectious / BMG. Today, the band take us to the boxing ring with the album’s second single, titled The Girls Are Fighting. It follows on from November’s Traps.

The video for The Girls Are Fighting was filmed at Repton Boxing Club, an old Victorian Bath House turned boxing club in Bethnal Green, London. Singer Kele Okereke comments on the inspiration behind the track:

There was no specific incident that inspired this song – it was more a composite of lots of things I’ve seen over the years when being in clubs and seeing violence erupt with feuding love rivals. I’ve always had a slight obsession with those sorts of moments; like a fuse being lit, when actions turn from words into violence. You can learn a lot about who people really are in those moments. I just wanted to capture that moment of going from nought to 10 in an evening, in a sweaty nightclub.

Bloc Party return to their roots on ‘Traps’

While most recently lead singer Kele Okereke has mainly been active as a singer-songwriter and drummer Louise Bartle focussed on her own band Novacub, Bloc Party announce their sixth studio album titled Alpha Games for release on April 29th 2022. The album’s first single, Traps, produced by Nick Launay & Adam Greenspan (Nick Cave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and IDLES), is reminiscent of the band’s early works. The new song is also their first new music since 2016’s, somewhat mixed, album Hymns. Kele comments on Traps:

From the moment we wrote ‘Traps’, we knew it had to be the first thing people heard from this album; playing it in soundchecks on our last tour before it was finished and hearing how it sounded in those big rooms and outdoors.
