With so many new releases dropping across streaming platforms and records stores every week, it can be hard to determine which ones to pick up. Indie Is Not A Genre provides you with a regularly updated list of new album releases. This week includes new records from Bear’s Den, Florence + The Machine and Mallrat among others.

1. Bear’s Den – Blue Hours

London duo Bear’s Den make their return with their fourth full length album Blue Hours. On the new album, Kevin Jones and Andrew Davie continue their signature blend of indie folk and 80s synths. The album’s title is a sort of headspace as Davie explained: “Blue Hours is a kind of imaginary space you get into at night, a place where you process difficult things or where you try to figure everything out.” The record’s themes revolve around mental health, dementia and self-reflection. Overall, the duo continue where their previous record, So that you might hear me…, left off.

2. Florence + The Machine – Dance Fever

Dance Fever was inspired by Florenceā€™s fascination with the Renaissance phenomenon of choreomania, in which groups of people danced wildly to the point of exhaustion, collapse and death. She had just begun to work on the new record, when the outbreak of the pandemic forced her to retreat to London. It was in her London home, that the songs began to take a new shape, inspired by dance as much as of folk icons Lucinda Williams or Emmylou Harris. It seems like Florence simply cannot make an album that is less than amazing. Dance Fever is no exception and may even be her best work to date.

3. Mallrat – Butterfly Blue

Mallrat began as a bedroom project and is the moniker of Brisbane native Grace Shaw. On her debut album, Butterfly Blue, she draws on combined influences from pop, rock, and folk to deliver her own blend of timeless pop. The album arrives 6 years after the debut EP and follows on from a plethora of singles that have gained over 300 million streams across music services. Mallrat is currently touring the UK and Europe supporting Conan Gray but it won’t be long before her own headline shows will sell out.
