DMA'sA good friend of mine has just moved to Australia and told me about this band DMA’s which is kind of a next big thing in Down Under. DMA’s (dee-em-ayes) is Johnny Took, Matt Mason and Tommy O’Dell – three friends who came together making nostalgic garage pop in a bedroom in Newtown, Australia after playing in different bands before. According to the band, the three letters in DMA’s don’t stand for anything, they’re merely an abbreviation of earlier names they’ve had. Apparently, they were called the Dirty Ma’s before until their manager suggested they change the name to DMA’s. Actually, I think that would have been a better name than these capitalized abbreviations that have become so fashionable in band names.

Writing a few songs together, the band demoed them in Johnny’s bedroom-studio long before they ever put out an official track or played a single show. After signing with Aussie tastemaker label I OH YOU (Violent Soho, Snakadaktal, DZ Deathrays), DMA’s released their debut single Delete to much critical acclaim. Dave Rowntree (Blur) said their music had the swagger of Oasis and the inventiveness of Arctic Monkeys. There is an undeniable truth to that statement but the closest they remind me of is James.

The self-titled debut EP was released in March this year followed by a 7″ that was released on November 14th featuring the new tracks Laced and So We Know. The 7” will also be released in the USA through Mermaid Avenue/Mom & Pop Records (Wavves, Smith Westerns, FIDLAR, Sleigh Bells) and in Europe through Partisan Records (Eagulls, The Dismemberment Plan). Both tracks were recorded in Johnny’s bedroom and are available from the usual digital resellers (if you don’t have vinyl player). You can also stream a couple of their tracks below.

They guys have just returned to Down Under after playing a couple of shows with The Courteneers across the UK but I bet it won’t be long before they return to the UK and Europe.
