Taking musical inspiration from early 90’s US indie-rock such as Weezer, Pavement and Superdrag, Lights Out is the debut single of Black Surf – and it’s a free download too. There is also a bit of The Smashing Pumpkins in there, particularly with regard to the vocals.
Black Surf is a band 10 years in the making. Formed from the ashes of Leeds bands Mishkin and iswimwithsharks. Ali Epstone (Vocals/Guitar) and Phil Jones (Lead Guitar) formed the band on opposite sides of the world (Sydney/Leeds) through the medium of Facetime and Dropbox. Since reuniting in the UK at the start of 2015, Black Surf became a four piece with the addition of Tom Ramsden (Bass) and Mark Forster (Drums).
Rather than wanting to recreate the music we grew up listening to, we wanted to take those mid 90s college rock bands and create simple, shameless alternative rock that makes people want to kiss and punch each other at the same time.
Lights Out was recorded in 2014 at Greenmount Studios, Leeds (The Cribs, Pulled Apart By Horses).
