DMA’s – Australia’s most British band
DMA’s (pronounced dee-em-ayes) are guitarist Matt Mason, singer Tommy O’Dell, and guitarist and main songwriter Johnny Took. Despite being from Australia, the band is known for their britpop sound and has often been likened to brit pop veterans Oasis.
Do DMA’s sound like Oasis?
When Noel Gallagher was asked in an interview whether he had heard of the Aussie band that sound like Oasis he said he hadn’t and added:
I’ll have to watch them [DMA’s] from side of stage and boo them.
When asked in our interview, Mason said that the comparison to Oasis was not their intention and that it mostly came from Tommy’s voice. All tracks are initially recorded by Took and Mason who sing in Australian or American accents, before O’Dell’s vocals are added.
Breakthrough single ‘Delete’ was released in 2013
Formed in 2012 in their hometown Sidney, DMA’s began recording their first demos in Took’s apartment. Both Took and Mason had been playing together for many years in different local bands before being joined by O’Dell, who up until then worked as a painter.
Their debut single Delete was eventually picked up by Aussie radio Triple-J and landed on heavy rotation. Delete was released on tastemaker label I OH YOU (Violent Soho, Snakadaktal, DZ Deathrays) to much critical acclaim.
Appearance on ‘Like A Version’
In October 2016, the band were invited to Triple J’s weekly ‘Like A Version’ segment where the covered Cher’s autotune classic Believe.
Believe was released as a standalone single in April 2017.
What does the name DMA’s mean?
According to the band, the three letters in DMA’s don’t stand for anything, they’re merely an abbreviation of earlier names they’ve had. Apparently, they were called the Dirty Ma’s before until their manager suggested they change the name to DMA’s.
DMA’s have released the following EPs and albums:
New Album For Now released on April 27th
On October 3rd 2017 the band released their first new single since the release of their debut album in 2016. The new single is titled Dawning and was accompanied by single launch shows in their hometown Sidney as well as Auckland, New Zealand.
